Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Let's Explore Your Parts!

Ever Feel Like There's a Committee Living Inside Your Head?

One part of you wants to make a change. Another part is terrified of it.

One part wants to relax, while another reminds you of the 47 things you should be doing instead.

And then there's that inner critic who apparently never takes a vacation.

Sound familiar?

What if, instead of fighting these parts of yourself, you got to know them?

That's the idea behind Internal Family Systems (IFS), a therapeutic approach that helps us better understand our internal world and develop a different relationship with ourselves.

Meet Your Parts

According to IFS, we all have different parts, each with its own feelings, beliefs, motivations, and ways of responding to the world.

Some parts try to keep us organized, productive, and in control. Others jump into action when difficult emotions arise. And some carry painful experiences or beliefs we've spent years trying to avoid.

IFS generally describes three types of parts:

  • Managers: The planners, perfectionists, people-pleasers, and inner critics who try to keep everything under control.

  • Firefighters: The parts that jump into action when uncomfortable emotions become overwhelming, sometimes through avoidance, distraction, or impulsive behavior.

  • Exiles: The more vulnerable parts that may carry painful memories, shame, fear, or feelings of rejection.

And here's the interesting part: even the parts that create difficulties may be trying to protect you.

IFS also introduces the concept of the Self, our capacity to approach our experiences with curiosity, compassion, calmness, and clarity.

The goal isn't to eliminate your parts. It's to understand them and help them find healthier ways of functioning.

So, What Does Parts Work Actually Look Like?

Imagine having a part that constantly tells you you're not good enough.

Your first instinct might be to silence it, argue with it, or prove it wrong. In IFS, we try something different.

We get curious.

Why is that part so critical? What is it afraid might happen if it stopped criticizing you? How long has it been doing this job?

Rather than immediately trying to change the part, we explore its role and the experiences that may have shaped it.

During our sessions, I'll help you identify different parts, understand how they interact, and explore the emotions and beliefs they carry.

You don't need to know anything about IFS or arrive with your parts already identified. We'll get to know them together.

Who Might Benefit From Parts Work?

Parts work may be helpful if you find yourself caught in the same patterns, struggling with conflicting emotions, or wondering why you sometimes get in your own way.

IFS may be worth exploring if you:

  • Struggle with self-criticism, perfectionism, or people-pleasing.

  • Feel torn between what you want and what you're afraid of.

  • Experience anxiety, shame, or difficulty managing emotions.

  • Notice recurring patterns in your relationships.

  • Want to better understand how past experiences influence your present life.

  • Simply want to develop a deeper understanding of yourself.

You don't have to be struggling to benefit from parts work. Sometimes curiosity about why we think, feel, and behave the way we do is reason enough to start exploring.

You Don't Have to Love Every Part of Yourself

Some parts are easy to appreciate. Others? Not so much.

You may have a part that procrastinates, another that worries constantly, or one that becomes angry when you feel criticized.

IFS encourages us to approach these experiences without automatically labeling them as bad or trying to get rid of them.

That doesn't mean accepting every behavior or allowing problematic patterns to continue.

It means developing enough understanding and compassion to create opportunities for meaningful change.

Sometimes the parts we dislike the most are the ones that have been working the hardest to protect us.

Let's Do Some Parts Work!

I'm a Level 1 IFS Practitioner through the IFS Institute.

Currently, I'm only accepting individual clients interested in exploring IFS who are also comfortable participating in recorded sessions for my continuing education.

These recordings are used for educational purposes, with your informed consent. Before beginning, we'll discuss the recording process, confidentiality, who may have access to recordings, and how your information will be protected.

Because I'm specifically seeking participants for this educational offering, we'll discuss whether this arrangement is a good fit before scheduling.
